Learn Power BIwhile you use Power BI.
BI Compass sits beside your report and explains each control the moment you reach for it — then gives you a short practice so it sticks. No videos, no second window, no hunting through documentation.
Windows 10 / 11 · Power BI Desktop · free tier, no card needed
Connect to a data source
Opens the sources you can import from. Start with Excel or a CSV while you learn.
Three things happen, and none of them interrupt you
Install and open the panel
BI Compass adds one button to Power BI's External Tools ribbon. It docks beside your report, out of the way.
Work the way you already do
Controls that have an explanation carry a small teal marker, so you know where help lives.
Hover, then practise
A short card explains the control. Press Learn and you get a two-minute practice that uses the real button.
Every button, explained where you are
Rest the pointer on a ribbon button, a view icon or a chart type for a moment and a card appears beside it: what it does, when to use it, and a realistic example.
- 71 tools covered across the ribbon, views and the Visualizations pane
- Shown beside the control, never on top of what you are reading
- A Learn button opens a practice for that exact tool
Get data
Bring data into your model
Opens the list of sources you can import from. For a first report, pick Excel workbook or Text/CSV.
Know what comes after the click
Once you pick a tool — Insert › New visual, for example — a small card walks you through the next steps and rings the area of Power BI to use.
- One guide per tool, shown once so it never nags
- Points at the exact pane, well or menu you need next
- Explains the why, not just the sequence
Pick a visual type
The Visualizations pane is open on the right — start with a bar chart.
Add fields
Drag a category to the Y axis and a number to the X axis.
Check the title
Use the Format pane to rename the visual so it reads on its own.
Finish something you can show
Five step-by-step lessons and two guided dashboard projects. Steps advance when BI Compass sees you did the step, or when you tell it you are done.
- Practices for each tool, two minutes at a time
- Projects use bundled synthetic data or your own field names
- Progress and settings stay on your PC
Coffee shop dashboard
Uses the bundled synthetic dataset, or map your own field names.
It watches the interface, not your data
BI Compass reads which controls Power BI is showing, using the same accessibility layer a screen reader uses. That is the whole list.
- Read-only UI Automation — it never clicks or types for you
- Never reads report data, file names or page names
- Works fully offline; the licence check is the only network call
- Diagnostics are manual, and you see the text before it sends
